You manage a property and are in charge of the rental units. One of the renters tells you that other people living in the building have harassed her because of her gender identity. She says they call her by a male name, use male pronouns and have targeted her with offensive slurs. She says she has received harassing notes on her door telling her to leave the building because no one wants her there. You ask the renter to give you details about when these events happened, who was involved and how they related to gender identity. You ask for a copy of the notes left on her door.

  • Are you meeting your responsibilities under the Code?

Yes, so far you are meeting your responsibilities under the Code. You have taken the complaint from your renter seriously and are investigating by asking for more details. The information you receive may show that this renter has experienced discrimination from other renters in the building based on her gender identity (a part of her identity that is protected by the Code). If that is what the information indicates, as a property manager you are responsible for taking steps to stop the discrimination.
