The Commissioner can use inquiries to promote and protect human rights in B.C. as well as intervene in human rights cases, as appropriate.

  • From hate to hope: Inquiry into hate during the COVID-19 pandemic

    In August 2021, B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner launched an inquiry into the rise of hate in B.C. during the COVID-19 pandemic. The inquiry explored why hate increased during the pandemic, where hate comes from and what actions we can take to stop hate now and in future times of crisis.

    In March 2023, the Commissioner released her findings and recommendations.

  • “We’re still here”: Inquiry into detentions under the Adult Guardianship Act

    In November 2023, B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner launched an inquiry into involuntary detentions under the Adult Guardianship Act (AGA).

    In April 2025, the Commissioner released her findings and recommendations.

  • “Un(media)ted”: Inquiry into the exclusion of media from the April 2023 Hastings decampment

    In December 2023, B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner launched ainquiry into restrictions placed on media by the Vancouver Police Department during an April 2023 decampment in Vancouver’s Downtown EastsideThe Commissioner’s findings and recommendations were released in February 2026.
