A workshop from BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner

Do you collect or use data about British Columbians in the course of your daily work? Have you ever wondered how governments use that data to help make decisions and set priorities?

BCOHRC heard from people across B.C.—particularly those from marginalized communities—that they wondered and were concerned about how data about them was being used. To begin to address their concerns, BCOHRC considered data collection using human rights-based and decolonizing approaches.

The report Disaggregated Demographic Data Collection in British Columbia: The Grandmother Perspective both answers and echoes calls to collect disaggregated data to advance human rights. It emerges from decades of activism—particularly from marginalized communities—calling for the data needed to develop policy that effectively addresses systemic inequalities. In other words, it calls—we call—for data that tells the story of how communities can be marginalized by and in the very systems designed to serve us all.

Join us for a 90-minute introductory session about disaggregated data based on the principles in this powerful report. Participants will be invited to use a sample of data from their daily work to highlight key aspects of the report.

Learning objectives

Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of the grandmother perspective principles, including:

  • the purpose of disaggregated data collection
  • the process of disaggregated data collection through respectful relationships
  • the use of disaggregated demographic data as a tool to address systemic discrimination
  • workshop participants will also practice using the purpose -> process -> tool framework for systemic change
