Every five years, a Special Committee of the Legislative Assembly reviews sections of the B.C. Human Rights Code that relate to the Human Rights Commissioner. This process helps to ensure transparency and proper oversight for the Human Rights Code and is an opportunity to reflect on how the Code is equipped to meet today’s challenges. The 2025 review is the first since BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner (BCOHRC) was established in 2019.

The Commissioner has prepared this initial submission in response to a request by the Committee. The purpose of the July 2025 submission to the Special Committee to Review Provisions of the Human Rights Code is to provide an overview of BCOHRC, including the history of the Office, some of our key achievements and how we have engaged communities across B.C. to protect and promote human rights in our province.

The Committee will also be seeking input from the public later on. Please see the Committee webpage for details on how to participate.
