What can Book Club funding for community projects include?
Your project should support human rights learning through literature. Examples include:
- community or intergenerational book clubs
- facilitated discussion groups
- public or small group readings
- book club kits or displays
- engagement with local literacy, cultural or community groups to develop book clubs
- hybrid or online book club platforms
- creative or reflective projects tied to Book Club titles
Applicants are expected to:
- Draw inspiration from the Human Rights Commissioner’s Book Club. Choose a format to bring human rights stories to life and explain how it will engage your community with the book(s) and their themes (for example, book club, display, discussion, creative project, or online engagement).
- choose book selections or stories that will resonate locally and describe how the themes will help spark meaningful community learning and conversation
- consider the possibility of being featured on our Office’s website and/or social media channels
Priority may be given to projects that:
- create accessible, inclusive opportunities for community learning and dialogue through literature
- show a connection to the Book Club title(s) from the Human Rights Commissioner’s Book Club
- reach participants who may not typically join human rights learning opportunities
- represent diverse regions of B.C., including rural and remote communities
- include collaboration (where appropriate) with community organizations, existing book clubs or local groups
What funding is available?
- $500 to $1,000 per application (determined by proposed project need and availability)
- Funding can support events or gatherings, supplies, materials, honoraria and more.
- Projects can include regular book club gatherings, other events or initiatives that promote engagement with the Commissioner’s Book Club. This could also include activities that support existing library and organization initiatives that can incorporate the Commissioner’s Book Club in a meaningful way.

- May 25, 2026: Applications open
- June 1, 2026: Optional information webinar (“lunch & learn”)
- Time: 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PDT

- June 30, 2026: Applications close
- July 2026: Applications reviewed and funding awarded
- September 2026 to January 2027: Project activities take place

What does reporting look like?
Reporting is designed to be light and practical. Funded partners may be asked to submit:
- date(s) and location (or format) of the project
- approximate participation (for example, attendance, kit circulation, views/engagement)
- a short reflection on what worked and what you learned
- project materials or outputs for possible sharing (photos where appropriate, promotional images, short write-up)
