Every five years, a Special Committee of the Legislative Assembly reviews sections of the B.C. Human Rights Code that relate to the Human Rights Commissioner. This process helps to ensure transparency and proper oversight for the Human Rights Code and is an opportunity to reflect on how the Code is equipped to meet today’s challenges. The 2025 review was the first since BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner (BCOHRC) was established in 2019.
The Commissioner prepared this initial submission in response to a request by the Committee. The purpose of the July 2025 submission to the Special Committee to Review Provisions of the Human Rights Code was to provide an overview of BCOHRC, including the history of the Office, some of our key achievements and how we have engaged communities across B.C. to protect and promote human rights in our province.
In September 2025, the Commissioner prepared a second submission in response to a request by the Committee.
In April 2026, the Committee released its final report and recommendations.
