Current inquiries

The following are the Commissioner’s current inquiries.

  • Adult Guardianship Act (AGA)

    An inquiry aiming to uncover how emergency powers granted by the AGA are used and to determine whether detention practices align with human rights laws and standards.

  • Media exclusion zones

    An inquiry into restrictions placed on media by the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) during an April 2023 decampment in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

  • Police use of force

    Building on the Commissioner’s 2021 Equity is Safer report, this inquiry seeks to quantify police use of force in B.C. against people who are racialized and/or have mental health issues.

The following are the Commissioner’s past inquiries.

  • From hate to hope: Inquiry into hate in the pandemic

    In August 2021, B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner launched an inquiry into the rise of hate in B.C. during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2023, the Commissioner released her findings and recommendations.
