On Thursday, July 9, 2020, from 2:30-4:30 pm PDT, BC’s Human Rights Commissioner Kasari Govender will be hosting an education and engagement session via Zoom with participants from BC’s coast and Vancouver Island.

The two-hour session is an opportunity to hear from people in the region about the pressing human rights issues impacting their lives and to share information about rights and responsibilities under B.C. law and our human rights system.

“I’m looking forward to spending time this week with people from the B.C. coast and Vancouver Island. This is my Office’s third digital townhall where we get to engage with folks in specific regions. It’s an important opportunity to hear about the unique human rights issues that people are facing in their local communities. We had hoped to be there in person, but since COVID-19 prevents that possibility, this is the next best thing,” said Commissioner Govender.

“We’ll be sharing information with those who can attend about their rights and responsibilities, as well as how they can seek support and justice when they feel that they have been discriminated against. Since we are a recently established office, we’ll also be sharing our first set of strategic priorities. I want to hear feedback about whether these priorities resonate with what people on the coast and the Island are experiencing in their day to day lives,” she continued.

This session is open to the public. Anyone interested in attending should RSVP at this link. Journalists wishing to attend are asked to identify themselves in advance so participants in the session can be advised that there is media in attendance.

The Commissioner is available for comment or interview on Wednesday, July 8 from 9:00-10:00am. If this doesn’t work for you, we’ll do our best to arrange an alternate time.

This education and engagement session is one of several that the Commissioner will be conducting. Her next virtual session is planned for Fraser Valley, on Tuesday, July 19.
